Our Story

Where Our Journey Began

When I was very young, my parents both worked, and I was left in the care of my grandparents in a little post-war, two-story home in a sleepy neighborhood in Richmond, VA. It was there, in the care of my grandparents, that I spent my formative years. At that time, my great-grandmother was still alive and living with my grandparents as well.

It was in that living room that I listened to stories and studied photo albums of my family dating

back to the 1860s. Soldiers returning home from the Civil War, what each member of my family

did for work, and how we ended up in that part of the country. Just inside the entryway was a

small coat closet. The inside of that coat closet door had hundreds of pencil and pen marks,

marking my height from the time I was 3 years old until I was a fully grown man, along with the

same marks for all of my cousins and, later, all of our children. It was in the front yard of that

house that my love for baseball was born.

My grandfather taught me to throw a devastating curveball that propelled me through the ranks

to becoming an all-state pitcher. The same front yard where he taught that same pitch to my

father and, many years later, to my son. My grandmother would walk me around the

neighborhood with the family dog, Louie, every day, and every afternoon, I would work with my

grandparents in the amazing garden in the backyard.

Long after I was grown and had moved away with my wife and kids, I still visited regularly,

helping with the garden, the household chores, doctors’ appointments, and the like. I sat and

listened to the same stories, listened to my grandfather play the same songs on the same

harmonica, but this time with a much deeper appreciation. Time changed the people, but the

house remained the same. I was there the night my grandmother passed away in 2015, and again

9 years later when my grandfather followed her home. I never could bring myself to go back to

that house once they were gone. As much as one can love a place, I loved that house.

Looking back at what my father and his sisters went through during that final decade is what

propelled me to start Heritage Home Mobility, Inc. I saw the struggle as they tried to turn a two-

story home into a one-story living space. I watched as they brought in round-the-clock care, their

debates on selling or needing to put my grandfather in a long-term care facility (he refused). I

saw the pain. I saw the emotional and financial toll it took on everyone. I saw a need and

recognized that, though I can’t help my grandparents any longer, I can help someone else’s.

As you read this letter, I’m imagining that you are facing a similar choice. Struggling with what

to do next. Weighing the options of in-home care, moving to a care facility and leaving your

home behind, or simply modifying your home to give you the freedom your family deserves. I

invite you to stay. Stay in the home you love. Stay amongst the memories that you and your

loved ones cherish. Allowing Heritage Home Mobility to modify your home to meet your

you the freedom to continue to live your life exactly how you want to live it, exactly where you

want to live it.
